2. Introduction: Who is Ben Earl?
Ben Earl has become one of English rugby’s most consistently effective forwards without ever being the loudest name in the conversation — a back-row player whose value shows up more in work-rate numbers than in flashy tries. This Ben Earl biography covers his path from Saracens’ academy system through Premiership title wins, an England Six Nations title, a Rugby World Cup semi-final and bronze medal in 2023, and a spot on the victorious British & Irish Lions squad in Australia in 2025.
By early 2026, Earl had passed 50 England caps, become a fixture of the national back row alongside players like Tom Curry and Maro Itoje, and continued to anchor a Saracens side he’s represented since his academy days. This piece runs through his Ben Earl stats, Ben Earl tries, his Ben Earl Rugby World Cup performances, and his overall Ben Earl club career and Ben Earl international caps record, along with the honors, playing style, and off-field details publicly known about him.
3. Early Life & Background Of Ben Earl
Ben Earl was born on January 7, 1998, in Redhill, Surrey (some England Rugby profiles list his early rugby roots in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, reflecting his family’s connection to that area). He was introduced to the sport through family and local club rugby, playing initially for Sevenoaks RFC before his talent led him into representative age-grade rugby.
He attended Tonbridge School in Kent, where he captained the school’s first XV and was recognized as the squad’s standout player during the 2015–16 season. He later also began studies at Queen Mary University of London alongside his early professional career.
4. Youth & Academy Career
Earl joined the Saracens academy at age 14 and rose quickly through England’s age-grade system, captaining sides at U16 and U18 level. He was part of England’s U20 Six Nations Grand Slam-winning side in 2017, and scored a try in that year’s U20 World Championship final against New Zealand. He went on to captain the England U20 side the following season.
He made his senior Saracens debut in 2016 at age 18 — scoring on his first start, an early sign of the impact he’d go on to have at senior level.
Did You Know? Earl scored a try in an U20 World Championship final against New Zealand before he’d even made 20 senior club appearances.
5. Ben Earl Club Career Stats
| Period | Club | Country | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2016–2020 | Saracens | England | Academy graduate, senior debut in 2016 |
| 2020–2021 | Bristol Bears (loan) | England | Won the European Challenge Cup while on loan |
| 2021–present | Saracens | England | Returned to Saracens; multiple Premiership titles and individual awards |
5.1 Saracens (2016–2020, 2021–present)
Earl’s first Saracens stint coincided with a period of major turbulence for the club, including its relegation from the Premiership over salary cap breaches. During the 2020–21 season, while Saracens competed in the second-tier Championship, Earl spent the campaign on loan.
5.2 Bristol Bears Loan (2020–2021)
His loan spell at Bristol Bears proved productive: Earl won the European Challenge Cup with the club during that season, gaining valuable senior game time away from Saracens’ rebuilding period.
5.3 Return to Saracens
Back at Saracens from 2021, Earl became one of the club’s standout performers. He was named Gallagher Premiership Player of the Season for 2021–22, helping Saracens reach that year’s final (a narrow loss to Leicester Tigers). The following season, he helped Saracens win the 2022–23 Premiership title, starting in the final win over Sale Sharks. He was also named to the Premiership Team of the Season multiple times, including in 2023–24.
6. Ben Earl International Career & Test Match Record
Earl made his senior England debut in the 2020 Six Nations as a replacement against Scotland, part of an England squad that won the title that year. He steadily built a place in the matchday squad through the early 2020s and, by the mid-2020s, had become a first-choice back-row option under head coach Steve Borthwick.
He reached his 50th England cap in March 2026, during a Six Nations match against Italy in Rome — a milestone that reflected his transition from squad rotation piece to established international mainstay. In 2024, he was voted England Men’s Player of the Year by his teammates at the RPA Awards, and was also nominated for the Six Nations Player of the Championship that year after scoring tries against both Wales and Ireland.
7. Ben Earl Rugby World Cup Performances
Earl was a regular feature of England’s squad at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, playing across all of England’s Pool D matches, including a 71–0 win over Chile. England reached the semi-finals of that tournament before losing narrowly to eventual champions South Africa, and went on to beat Argentina in the third-place play-off — a match in which Earl scored his first international try, helping England secure the bronze medal.
Did You Know? Earl’s first-ever international try came in a World Cup bronze-medal match, not a routine Six Nations fixture — a notably high-stakes stage for a maiden Test try.
8. Ben Earl Playing Style & Key Skills
Earl is widely regarded as one of the most efficient carriers and ruck operators in the modern back row. Key aspects of his game include:
- High carry volume with strong gain-line success — statistical tracking services have regularly ranked him among the Premiership and Six Nations leaders in carries and post-contact metres for a back-rower.
- Breakdown effectiveness — reliable at securing quick ruck ball, valuable in the fast-tempo systems both Saracens and England have run under their current coaching set-ups.
- Positional versatility — capable of playing flanker, Number 8, and has even featured at outside centre for England, a rare degree of positional flexibility for a forward.
- Work-rate and repeatability — coaches have repeatedly highlighted his consistency across 80-minute performances rather than isolated highlight moments.
9. Major Honors & Achievements
- 3x Gallagher Premiership champion with Saracens
- European Challenge Cup winner (with Bristol Bears, loan spell)
- Gallagher Premiership Player of the Season (2021–22)
- Multiple Premiership Team of the Season selections
- England Men’s Player of the Year (2024, RPA Awards)

Did You Know? Earl’s England U20 side won a Six Nations Grand Slam in 2017 — the same tournament format his senior England side would win three years later, in his senior debut campaign.
10. Ben Earl Rivalries & Notable Match-Ups
Earl’s most consistent on-field rivalries come through recurring Premiership derby-style fixtures against clubs like Harlequins and Leicester Tigers, including the closely fought 2022 Premiership final loss to Leicester. At international level, England’s Six Nations fixtures against France and Ireland in the mid-2020s have frequently featured Earl in high-carry-volume roles against similarly physical back rows, while the 2023 World Cup semi-final against South Africa remains the most significant knockout-stage test of his international career to date.
11. Ben Earl Injuries & Setbacks
Public reporting on Earl’s career shows no major long-term injury absence disrupting his rise; his career has been notable for relatively consistent availability compared to some back-row peers who have dealt with recurring concussion or joint issues. No specific chronic injury history has been confirmed publicly beyond standard playing knocks typical of professional rugby.
12. Off-the-Field Life
Earl has spoken in interviews about his Christian faith, including attending St Peter’s Church in Notting Hill, where he has at times been joined by Saracens and England teammate Maro Itoje. Earl’s mother, Belinda Earl, has a background in UK retail leadership, though Earl himself has kept most family-life details out of the public sports press beyond what’s been shared in official club and Lions profile pieces.
13. Ben Earl Net Worth, Brand & Endorsements
As a Premiership and England international rather than a global commercial star on the scale of top footballers or NBA players, Earl’s endorsement profile is more modest and largely centered on rugby-specific and UK-market partnerships, alongside Saracens and England Rugby commercial activity. Detailed, verifiable net worth figures for professional rugby players like Earl are not widely published or independently confirmed by reputable financial sources, unlike the more heavily reported figures common in football or basketball; any specific dollar or pound figure circulating online should be treated as speculative rather than confirmed.

16. Legacy & Impact on Rugby
While still mid-career, Earl’s legacy so far is built around reliability and adaptability rather than singular headline moments — a modern back-rower whose statistical output (carries, tackles, breakdown involvement) has made him a coach’s favorite even when he’s not the most visible name in a matchday squad. His rise from a club hit hard by relegation to a Premiership-winning, Lions-touring international is also frequently cited as a case study in patient squad-building at Saracens.
17. What’s Next — Current Season/Career Outlook
As of August 2026, Earl remains contracted to Saracens, continuing to be one of the club’s key back-row options, and remains an established first-choice selection for England under Steve Borthwick heading toward the next World Cup cycle.
